Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Traditional liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat tissue from persistent locations around your body. This removal reshapes the treatment area, making it ideal for fat deposits that resist your efforts to reduce through diet and exercise. Among the body areas treated with surgical liposuction are:

  • Thighs
  • Waist and abdomen
  • Buttocks and hips
  • Upper arms
  • Chest
  • Neck and chin
  • Back

A drawback of surgical liposuction is its long recovery time, often measured in months. The process is invasive and, depending on the treatment area, recovery could be uncomfortable or painful. There are, however, alternatives to traditional liposuction that are less invasive, resulting in minimal recovery time. Dr. Heilbron offers laser lipolysis treatments for patients.

How does Smartlipo work?

Like surgical liposuction, Smartlipo uses a tube inserted into the treatment areas of your body. However, it’s much smaller, since it’s not used in the same way as traditional techniques. Instead, a fiber delivers laser energy to the fat tissue under your skin to liquefy fat cells, which are then drawn out with suction through the tube.

The Smartlipo laser uses three wavelengths of light to target three areas under your skin. These treatment targets are:

  • Fat disruption
  • Coagulation of blood vessels
  • Stimulation of collagen production

This three-pronged effect reshapes your treatment areas by breaking down and removing fat as well as creating new collagen tissue to encourage smooth, youthful appearance of the area after treatment.Any process that breaks down fat cells could be called lipolysis. Dr Heilbron uses laser to break down the fat cells making it easier to remove the fat. This procedure needs only local anesthetics, and recovery time is a day or two, compared with weeks or months with conventional liposuction.
