Botox and Juvederm Q & A

What causes facial lines and wrinkles?

There are two general ways that lines and wrinkles on your face form. Common to both is the loss of elasticity of your surface skin. As you age, your skin loses some ability to retain moisture and bounce back tightly as it did when you were young. This makes your skin more susceptible to what happens in the deeper dermal layers and below the skin.

The two types of lines that start to appear are due to either cracks and fissures in support tissue, or active contraction of facial muscles. The outer skin simply reflects what’s happening beneath the surface. Passive lines can be treated with dermal fillers, which prop up the outer skin, while contracted muscles, which cause worry lines and crow’s feet, benefit from active treatment. Dr. Heilbron chooses Juvéderm and Botox respectively.

How does Juvéderm work?

First, Juvéderm is a collection of dermal filler products, each with specific characteristics that address particular treatment challenges. The Juvéderm line uses injectable gels using hyaluronic acid, a substance that’s naturally present in your skin which attracts and stores moisture. The gels boost the skin above the treatment zone, reducing or eliminating the appearance of fine lines and moderate wrinkles on the surface.

Juvéderm’s primary products include:

  • Voluma® XC: A volumizing injectable intended to lift and contour your cheeks
  • Vollure™ XC: Which treats moderate to severe wrinkles, such as the lines and folds that appear beside your mouth, the so-called parentheses lines

What is Botox?

Taking its name from its key active ingredient, Botox is made from extremely diluted amounts of purified botulinum toxin. Initially used as a treatment to help with eye muscle problems, the botulinum toxin has a paralytic effect on muscles, causing them to relax.

Since frown lines and crow’s feet result from almost permanent contraction of the muscles that form expressions, injections of Botox into these muscles create a smooth, relaxed profile, over which your outer skin follows, eliminating the bumps, ridges, and lines associated with these expressions.
